Step 1: Confirm Your Product’s Regulatory Status<\/strong><\/p>\n Before anything else, establish what Nigeria’s import regulations mean for your specific product.<\/p>\n If you are exporting food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, medical devices, or packaged water, you will almost certainly require NAFDAC registration. NAFDAC registration takes three to six months for new applications, and you cannot start the process too early. Most manufactured goods, including electronics, electrical equipment, building materials, tyres, machinery, and toys, require a Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) certificate. This involves third-party testing by a SON-accredited Conformity Assessment Body and typically takes six to twelve weeks. Pharmaceuticals require additional Nigeria-specific registration beyond NAFDAC; agricultural inputs are regulated by NAQS; and explosives and other controlled goods have separate requirements.<\/p>\n Start this assessment before you confirm any shipment dates with your buyer. The regulatory timeline governs everything that follows.<\/p>\n Step 2: Gather Your Core Export Documentation<\/strong><\/p>\n Every ocean freight shipment from the UK to Nigeria requires the following documents as a minimum.<\/p>\n The commercial invoice must include seller and buyer details, a specific description of the goods, the HS code, quantity, unit price, total value, currency, Incoterms, port of loading, and port of destination. Nigerian customs cross-references declared values against benchmark prices, and under-declaration is identified and penalised. The packing list must match the commercial invoice exactly, covering every carton, its weight, dimensions, and contents. Any discrepancy between the packing list and the invoice triggers a customs examination.<\/p>\n A Certificate of Origin validates that your goods were manufactured in the UK. It is required for duty calculation and mandatory at most West African ports, and must be authenticated by your local Chamber of Commerce. The Bill of Lading is issued by the shipping line once your goods are loaded. The consignee details on the Bill of Lading must exactly match your commercial invoice and your Nigerian buyer’s Form M.<\/p>\n The Cargo Tracking Note (CTN) is mandatory for all cargo entering Nigerian ports and must be issued by an authorised agent before the vessel departs the UK. If cargo arrives at Lagos without a valid CTN, it will not be released. If your product is NAFDAC-regulated, the registration certificate must be current and the NAFDAC number must appear on product labelling. Where SONCAP applies, the certificate must accompany the shipment.<\/p>\n Step 3: Understand the Nigerian Importer’s Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n Exporting to Nigeria is not just about what you do as the UK exporter. Your Nigerian buyer has their own mandatory requirements, and if these are not in place, your goods will not clear Nigerian customs even if your documentation is perfect.<\/p>\n Your Nigerian buyer must open a Form M (Foreign Exchange Form) through a Nigerian bank before goods can be cleared. The Form M is a Central Bank of Nigeria requirement, and without it NICMS (Nigeria Customs Management System) will not accept the customs entry. Import duties are calculated based on the Nigerian Customs Tariff Schedule using ECOWAS CET codes, and it is the buyer’s responsibility to calculate and pay them. The buyer must also use an NCS-licensed clearing agent to file the customs entry and manage clearance at the port. Problems with their clearing agent become your problem if they result in delays.<\/p>\n Before you confirm a shipment with your Nigerian buyer, confirm they have an active Form M or can open one, and that they have a reliable licensed clearing agent.<\/p>\n Step 4: Choose Your Shipping Method<\/strong><\/p>\n For most UK-Nigeria shipments, ocean freight is the standard and most cost-effective choice. Transit time from UK ports such as Felixstowe and Southampton to Lagos is approximately 25-35 days.<\/p>\n LCL (Less than Container Load) is suitable for shipments under ten to fifteen cubic metres. Your cargo is consolidated with other exporters’ goods in a shared container, with a typical minimum of one cubic metre or 300 kilograms. FCL (Full Container Load) uses a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container, which is more cost-effective for larger volumes and gives you control of the entire container.<\/p>\n Step 5: Book Your Shipment<\/strong><\/p>\n Once your documentation is in order and your Nigerian buyer’s Form M is confirmed, book your ocean freight with your freight forwarder. At this stage, confirm the departure date and vessel schedule, particularly around Nigerian and UK public holidays when port operations are reduced. Confirm the container type and size your buyer’s warehousing and transport can accommodate, verify the all-in freight rate including origin charges and destination handling, and note the UK port cut-off date, which is typically three to five days before vessel departure.<\/p>\n Step 6: Manage Pre-Departure Documentation<\/strong><\/p>\n In the week before departure, confirm that your CTN has been issued and that the reference number exactly matches your Bill of Lading. Review your commercial invoice and packing list one final time for any discrepancies. Confirm that your NAFDAC and SONCAP certificates are valid and that copies are included in the documentation pack. Ensure your Certificate of Origin is authenticated.
