Case Study: Moving Out-of-Gauge Machinery from the UK to Kenya

When production in East Africa depends on a single piece of machinery arriving on time, the stakes are high. That was the case for a UK-headquartered food company that asked Freight Agency Limited to move oversized, specialised equipment from London Gateway to Mombasa, safely and without disrupting its manufacturing schedule.

Meeting a complex logistics brief

This wasn’t standard container freight. The cargo required a tailored solution: specialist trucking from the UK site, careful stowage, and secure lashing onto a 40-foot flat rack before loading for its sea voyage to Kenya. Any miscalculation in weight distribution, securing, or timing could have had serious consequences for both the shipment and the customer’s production schedule.

To deliver the project, Freight Agency Limited partnered with Freight in Time, our fellow member of the Africa Logistics Network (ALN). This combination of UK project expertise and in-market knowledge in Kenya meant the move could be planned as one continuous operation, not a hand-off between disconnected providers.

End-to-end control, from gateway to port

Our team coordinated the full journey: export documentation, port handling at London Gateway, loading and securing on the flat rack, and closely monitored transit through to arrival in Mombasa. Working with our ALN partner, we aligned vessel arrival with the customer’s production timeline, ensuring the machinery was available when their team needed it on site.

Keeping African distribution running

The successful delivery of this shipment helped safeguard ongoing production for a major food brand supplying markets across Africa. It also underlined Freight Agency Limited’s ability to manage complex, out-of-gauge cargo into key African gateways—combining project cargo know-how with trusted local partnerships.
